Between the Lines…
The legend of Kaassassuk tells the story of an orphan, scorned by his community and left to fend for himself, who — after an encounter with a supernatural being — acquires extraordinary strength and becomes an invincible hero.
A hunter and self-taught watercolourist, Jakob Danielsen transposes this founding myth into a pictorial series of remarkable ethnographic precision. Convinced that no single image could do justice to a hunting scene, he conceived his work in sequences, unfolding the narrative across multiple watercolours. Each painting becomes a visual fragment of an oral epic passed down through the generations — revealing not only the action, but the atmosphere and dramatic tension of the myth itself.
Recognised as a storyteller in his own right, Danielsen brings to these tales an insider’s gaze: that of a man of the frozen lands who knows intimately the symbolism of the natural world. His brush lays bare the layers of the territory — mythic landscape, space of survival, cradle of an aesthetic shaped by the realities of the Arctic.
