CaptureBetween the Lines…
Some beauties allow themselves to be approached only through thorns.
The giraffe seems to step out of a dream of foliage. Its face emerges between the branches, caught in a weave of dark lines that close around it without ever holding it back. Light glides across its coat; the thorns stand watch. Then, at the heart of this harshness, an unexpected gentleness.
Here, nature grows dense, almost impenetrable, thick with life. It takes the eye of someone who loves wild horizons to make out, among the scrub, this almost secret apparition. Hubert Roth does not seek the giraffe: he waits for it to consent to show itself.
And so the thorns take on a new meaning. They no longer wound; they draw. It may be looking at us, but it does not belong to us.
That is the singular quality of this photograph: it lets us glimpse Tanzania without claiming to capture it. A land indifferent to our expectations, where grace persists among the brambles, silent, untouched.
